Officially, I went to Bakersfield to check out stuff like what is pictured above. But you know what, if I drive 4-5 hours each way, there's no reason why I can't check out the local purveyors of yarn. In Bakersfield, this takes me to
Classy Knits and Yarns.
They have a pretty good selection of yarn, plus embroidery supplies. The owner/operator was very nice and had more energy than I could muster in a month. There was a great big table to work at, which is always a big bonus in my mind, and a good schedule of fibrous gatherings. Check them out if you're in the area!
I bought even more sock yarn. This was too pretty to resist.
